What To Consider
Before Building a Web Site
What you do,
What your product or service is about,
Your business name,
Your domain name (http://www.????.co.uk / .com).
What would be the best twenty words to describe your business and what you offer?
How you would like your site to look?
Its a good idea to look at the competition. See if you like their sites or how you
would change them. (Make note of ANY sites you think are OK or give you ideas)
Fonts: What would best reflect you and your business and match your
existing paper work, logos, corporate image, etc. (if your not sure, play around
with MS Word Document, get the feel and it can be fun).
Colours: Background, foreground, font, frames. Would Pictures,
GIFs, logos help express your company image. Links to other sites to help
explain technical support.
Categories / Pages: Navigation, Home, Different Products / Service, About
Us, How to Find Us, Contact Details, Information board, etc. How big do you want your
site?
Updates: Prices, Dates, Changing Stock, etc.
Keywords for search engines
These are common words that a potential customer will use in
his search to find your product / service on a internet search engine such as
Google, Ask Jeeves or Lycos.
Florist may use: Flowers, Bouquets, Wreath, Wedding, Delivery.
Tyre fitter may use: Tyre, Puncture, Wheel, Fitting.
Welding specialist may use: Steel, Metal, Weld, Welding, Fabrication.
These words must be used as many times as possible in your: Name, how you describe your
product / service.
Also your location must be taken into account, i.e., Bristol, Somerset, Sussex., etc.
Your potential customer may just put in his search tyres sussex, a search
engine will pickup anyone who has paid to be at the top of the ratings first and then any
web site with the most matching keywords will appear next. The more likely keywords you
use the better chance you have of being at the top.
Ask yourself, how many pages do you view before giving up your search if its 1 of
1,000 pages? Most people will only view 3 or 4, then get bored, then they will be gone.
Where do you start your web site?
You need a domain name that is a short name unique to you and
reflects your business.
A host, that is a company that will let the world view your web site. A good idea of what
you want to say or show to the world.
A web designer that WILL get you close to the top of the search engine results.

year, after the first year all you have to pay for is the Domain and host renewal (At this
time around 50 pounds (GBP) per year. Costs may change).
